Marshall, Michigan – CU in School, a student-run branch program that operates in area school districts, opens for the 2023-24 school year on October 9, 2023.

The focus of CU in School, led by Marshall Community Credit Union (MCCU), is to teach students important money management skills, instill a savings mindset, and increase a student’s knowledge of financial products and services. It is also a supplement to the math and social skills provided through the school system. The program teaches students lifelong employment skills including organization, human relations, and teamwork, and introduces the importance of building a healthy relationship with money and a financial institution.

Students at the elementary and middle school level are led by Janell Quinn, Youth Financial Education Coordinator, and Laura Van Dyke, CCUFC, Financial Education Specialist, is the lead for the high school program.

“Our goal is to make financial education fun and accessible to all,” said Van Dyke. “The program starts in kindergarten, with a focus on building savings accounts, and depending upon the partner school, can continue through 12th grade. The entire program provides a gradual progression of financial knowledge to equip students with the necessary tools to make financially sound decisions upon graduation.”

The student-run branches are staffed with Student Volunteers who encourage their peers to utilize the branch and perform branch operations including branch manager, bookkeeper, data administrator, marketing manager, and teller.
